What is aerating?
Aerating is the process of punching holes into your lawn to allow water, oxygen, fertilizers, and other nutrients to penetrate the soil and better reach the roots of your grass.
Aerating is usually done with a Power Aerator. The Power Aerator has a circular wheel in the front or back with hollow cylinders or spikes pointing out around the wheel.
Why should I aerate?
Aerating should be done just prior to fertilizing or reseeding your lawn. This will help allow the fertilizer, seed, and other nutrients to penetrate your lawn and soil, thereby producing better results.
How often and when should I aerate my lawn?
Once or twice a year depending on the type of soil you have. The Spring and Fall are great times to aerate. Hard packed soils should be aerated twice a year. Call us for a free estimate.
Try to water and/or dampen your lawn one day prior to aerating. This will help soften the soil and allow for better penetration by the aerator, thereby providing better results.
Why should I fertilize?
Your lawn needs many nutrients for healthy growth. The three primary elements - nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium - need to be added to your lawn in the form of fertilizer. Nitrogen is the most important element you can add to your lawn for it is the element needed to make the grass grow and get its green color.
When should I fertilize?
At least twice a year! Once during the Spring and once during the Fall. Call us for a special assessment of your lawn and what will work best for your situation.
How do I get rid of broadleaf weeds?
Broadleaf weeds can easily be managed and controlled if you keep to a year-round schedule. Also, mowing your lawn on a regular basis can help prevent unwanted weeds. A number of herbicides can also be effective in trouble areas.
When is the best time to water?
Always try to water your lawn in the early morning. Early morning watering is best due to the lack of evaporation that takes place, as well as high humidity and morning dew that adds to the moisture.
When should I mow?
It all depends on how fast your grass grows. During the growing season, lawns should be cut at least once a week. Many say it is best to cut your grass when it has grown 1/3 past its normal height.
